about

A light hearted blend of instrumental funk, breakbeat, rock and industrial music laced with chilled-out atmospheric interludes with drifting melodic lines and driving modulation, focussing on elements of catchy out-there rhythms and shifting scales filled with bluesy dissonance and unexpected consonances.

Featuring a combination of laid-back (meaning somewhat amateur) electric guitar improv with spaced-out landscapes, funky synthesized baselines and plenty of heart, these tracks often venture from atmospheric to intense in interesting and unusual ways.

Each track takes some relatively simple ideas and develops them into more complex and interesting musical landscapes.

This album is, unlike much of my old music, mostly in the usual 12 equal temperament system (The octave split into 12 logarithmically equal pieces). However, two of the tracks (Inflorescence and Ephemeral Glade) are in 22 equal temperament. 12 tone equal represents the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th harmonics well but misses out on the 7th and 11th. 22 equal temperament could be thought of as taking the regular 12 tones, removing one to make 11, stretching them out so each semitone is a bit larger and the last one reaches the octave, and then adding a note half way between each new one to give 22 equal sized notes. Given that all of the notes are stretched in either direction relative to our normal 12 equal (except the octave and tritone), the harmonies sound a bit strange, but are nonetheless fairly accurate at representing all the harmonics up to 12. Plus 22 equal is funky as.

I hope you enjoy the album!

Xotla Melbourne, Australia

My name is Declan Clark, better known as 'Xotla', a Nahuatl word meaning 'to ignite' or 'to blossom', the fusion of which is a beautiful concept I chose my alias in honor of. I spend my time amongst lush forests and diverse wildlife, which inspires the music I create.
I work with a mixture of unusual time signatures and esoteric tunings, and utilise instruments such as microtonal guitars.
