about

Please note that when making this album, I was very new to composing and stacking unusual tunings and rhythms on top was a bit of a wild move. At the time I was very happy with these tracks, but in hindsight they lack proper composition technique, are filled with poor choices and improper processing of samples and synthesizers and lack a lot of polish which I wasn't able to hear at the time, in part due to lack of experience and in part due to my laptop at the time having less processing power than a microchip jammed into a potato, so much so that I hardly had the luxury of previewing music while making it without constant stuttering.

That being said, I consider this album to be part of an important stepping stone in the musical side of my life, having accomplished something which at the time seemed insane, making a whole album of music by myself. Far from being embarrassed by its flaws, I remember this music fondly, reminding me to always improve in any way that I can. Follows is the original description:

This album is just as the name implies; a mixed bag of microtonal music! Garden gnomes have just as much to do with microtonal music as any of these tracks have to do with each other (that is to say little!), and also 'garden gnomes' is an inexact rhyme of 'microtones' (so it sounds good!).

Inside you'll find a collection of xenharmonic tracks each with their own unique theme and story to tell, and many with very unusual rhythms and time signatures to boot! Try to count along!

Microtonal music consists of notes not found on the usual 12 keys of your average piano, but rather b e t w e e n them! These new pitches allow for new and unusual ratios of frequencies, producing harmonies completely novel to the Western ear! Hopefully this album can enlighten you on the power of microtones, or if you're already a microtonal veteran then just sit back and enjoy some new uses of microtones!

I've made this album free to download, and if you'd like to support me in making more unusual music and hopefully constructing a microtonal instrument to play live (!!!) then any donation is wholeheartedly greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much for checking out my music! I find it to be an extremely helpful creative outlet, and I hope that the feelings and creativity it inspires in you may assist you wherever you are at in life. It is my aim that my music could incite as much joy in you as it did in me to make.

If you have any questions regarding the use of these different tunings and scales, or on the application of wild and changing time signatures, (or anything else for that matter) feel free to email me at xotlamusic@gmail.com.

about

Xotla Melbourne, Australia

My name is Declan Clark, better known as 'Xotla', a Nahuatl word meaning 'to ignite' or 'to blossom', the fusion of which is a beautiful concept I chose my alias in honor of. I spend my time amongst lush forests and diverse wildlife, which inspires the music I create.
I work with a mixture of unusual time signatures and esoteric tunings, and utilise instruments such as microtonal guitars.
